How to measure your dog's neck for a leather dog collar

Every leather dog collar that we make is tailor made to fit your dog’s neck like a glove, with enough room to tighten or loosen to allow for differences due to grooming.  No more annoying flaps of leather that look unsightly and more often than not get chewed on.

It really couldn't be easier to measure your dog’s neck for a handmade leather dog collar from Petiquette Collars.  All you will need is a soft tape measure or a piece of string, a pen and paper, and perhaps most importantly, your dog.

We are always happy to help when it comes to choosing the size for your dog collar to ensure the perfect fit for your canine friend.  If you are in any doubt, please contact us.

Measuring your dog for a classic collar

Step 1

Have your dog stand comfortably, hopefully they won’t wriggle too much, but if they do, then bribery with some tasty treats can help.  Wrap the tape measure or piece of string around the middle of your dog’s neck so that it is touching the fur but is not tight around the neck.

Step 2

Make a note of this reading and then take a look at the sizes we offer for each of our bespoke collars.

We would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole would be as close to the neck measurement as possible.

For example

If your dog has a neck size of roughly 13.5”, then you should choose a 13” - 15” collar size.  This will give enough room to tighten it should they lose a little weight, and it gives enough room to slacken it if needed.

Measuring a sighthound for a collar

Step 1

If you have a sighthound such as an Italian Greyhound, Whippet, lurcher or Greyhound for example, rather than measuring around the middle of the neck, wrap the tape measure so that it is fairly snug, just behind the ears and under the chin at the top of the neck.

Step 2

As with our classic collars would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole is as close to the neck measurement as possible.

If you are measuring for a house collar, we would advise that you measure further down the neck, so that the collar will hang fairly loosely.

This soft Italian leather dog collar is simple, elegant and durable.

You won’t have to worry about sharp edges chaffing your dog’s neck. The collar is made by hand from velvety smooth Italian calf leather and finished with rolled edges, so it feels comfortably soft and supple from day one.

The collar can be made in a range of widths and sizes to suit any breed of dog, and is available in virtually any colour you fancy. There are nearly 30 colours to choose from – some vibrant and jewel-like, others subtle and muted. Even better, the leather is completely colour-fast. No matter how wet it gets, the colour will stay on the collar, not your dog’s neck.

Your dog may love rolling in mud, but the leather will come up clean as a whistle. Just give it a quick wipe with a soft cloth.

Unlike cheaper varieties, this collar is made from high quality leather throughout. Lightweight Italian calf leather is cut by hand and wrapped around a strong leather core, with a soft nappa cowhide lining against your dog’s skin. Just like an expensive leather sofa, it will get softer and more beautiful over time.

Once you have a glossy new collar, your old lead may look a bit dull by comparison. Why not complete the look with a matchingleather dog lead?

Leads are approx 1 metre long. Crystal leads will have the same colour crystals at the base of the lead

Very soft and smart

We bought this lovely collar for our 11 year old Westie. We wanted a very soft, comfortable, good quality leather collar for him and we were not disappointed. It looks fabulous on him and he loves it 😊.

Fabulous collar

This is the second dog collar I have bought from Petiquette. Absolutely love the vast array of colours, I went for shamrock green for my chocolate Labrador., and the quality & craftsmanship is exceptional. Delivery was really fast - I ordered on bank holiday Monday & it was delivered Thursday. I will only buy my dog collars from Petiquette & highly recommend them. Thank you very much

Very good quality

Love the colour and the quality. The only improvement I can suggest is that the D ring could be a little wider so that there is sufficient space to fit both the collar hook and a charm hook as it becomes a bit tight. Alternatively have two D ring option to purchase.

Stunning quality

The collar is of fantastic quality and such a beautiful colour. Very hard wearing for my giant breed. To top it off, it was made and delivered earlier than expected. Great customer service
