How to measure your dog's neck for a leather dog collar

Every leather dog collar that we make is tailor made to fit your dog’s neck like a glove, with enough room to tighten or loosen to allow for differences due to grooming.  No more annoying flaps of leather that look unsightly and more often than not get chewed on.

It really couldn't be easier to measure your dog’s neck for a handmade leather dog collar from Petiquette Collars.  All you will need is a soft tape measure or a piece of string, a pen and paper, and perhaps most importantly, your dog.

We are always happy to help when it comes to choosing the size for your dog collar to ensure the perfect fit for your canine friend.  If you are in any doubt, please contact us.

Measuring your dog for a classic collar

Step 1

Have your dog stand comfortably, hopefully they won’t wriggle too much, but if they do, then bribery with some tasty treats can help.  Wrap the tape measure or piece of string around the middle of your dog’s neck so that it is touching the fur but is not tight around the neck.

Step 2

Make a note of this reading and then take a look at the sizes we offer for each of our bespoke collars.

We would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole would be as close to the neck measurement as possible.

For example

If your dog has a neck size of roughly 13.5”, then you should choose a 13” - 15” collar size.  This will give enough room to tighten it should they lose a little weight, and it gives enough room to slacken it if needed.

Measuring a sighthound for a collar

Step 1

If you have a sighthound such as an Italian Greyhound, Whippet, lurcher or Greyhound for example, rather than measuring around the middle of the neck, wrap the tape measure so that it is fairly snug, just behind the ears and under the chin at the top of the neck.

Step 2

As with our classic collars would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole is as close to the neck measurement as possible.

If you are measuring for a house collar, we would advise that you measure further down the neck, so that the collar will hang fairly loosely.

Disappointing

Received the tag quickly in the post but discovered the engraving was only available on the back. Had that been clearer on the Internet I woukd not have purchased because it seems pointless to have a blank front tag!

I'm very sorry that you were disappointed by the tag. As I explained to you by email, the very first line of the product description for the tag on the website explains that the Swarovski crystal ID tags can only be engraved on the back of the tag, I am sorry if you did not read this. As I also explained, Red Dingo cannot engrave the front of the crystal tags as the crystal would be damaged by the engraving machine, and as it has been personalised and is not faulty can not be refunded.

A beautiful tag!

We ordered the Swarovski ID tag for our whippet, Jasmine and are delighted with it. It looks lovely on her new collar for special occasions!

ID Tag

I like the sparkly crystal but was a little disappointed with the engraving. I think it would be good if it could be engraved on both sides.
