How to measure your dog's neck for a leather dog collar

Every leather dog collar that we make is tailor made to fit your dog’s neck like a glove, with enough room to tighten or loosen to allow for differences due to grooming.  No more annoying flaps of leather that look unsightly and more often than not get chewed on.

It really couldn't be easier to measure your dog’s neck for a handmade leather dog collar from Petiquette Collars.  All you will need is a soft tape measure or a piece of string, a pen and paper, and perhaps most importantly, your dog.

We are always happy to help when it comes to choosing the size for your dog collar to ensure the perfect fit for your canine friend.  If you are in any doubt, please contact us.

Measuring your dog for a classic collar

Step 1

Have your dog stand comfortably, hopefully they won’t wriggle too much, but if they do, then bribery with some tasty treats can help.  Wrap the tape measure or piece of string around the middle of your dog’s neck so that it is touching the fur but is not tight around the neck.

Step 2

Make a note of this reading and then take a look at the sizes we offer for each of our bespoke collars.

We would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole would be as close to the neck measurement as possible.

For example

If your dog has a neck size of roughly 13.5”, then you should choose a 13” - 15” collar size.  This will give enough room to tighten it should they lose a little weight, and it gives enough room to slacken it if needed.

Measuring a sighthound for a collar

Step 1

If you have a sighthound such as an Italian Greyhound, Whippet, lurcher or Greyhound for example, rather than measuring around the middle of the neck, wrap the tape measure so that it is fairly snug, just behind the ears and under the chin at the top of the neck.

Step 2

As with our classic collars would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole is as close to the neck measurement as possible.

If you are measuring for a house collar, we would advise that you measure further down the neck, so that the collar will hang fairly loosely.

Absolutely star struck!

My Schnauzer Reggie looks so handsome in his new teal coloured “Starstruck” collar. He already has a “Chaos Theory” one in blue so this new one makes a change. Everyone comments on it, and him when we are out, I think they are all star struck! Beautifully made, even nicer leather this time and each crystal and star are very securely applied.
Definitely has the wow factor!

A little bit too thick

I love the collar however I ordered a small size and the collar is very wide. I would have preferred a slimmer size as small dogs don’t all have necks that are long. The collar fits but I think he feels he can’t move his neck

Beautiful and somethng not mentioned!

We wanted a special collar for our special girlie's (cocker spaniel) 10th birthday and this doesn't disappoint, the clear crystals whether in sunlight or artificial light are like diamonds! and sparkle amazingly beautiful (sunlight especially) however one thing I noticed was their superb practicality at night whereby any light source bounces off these even the coloured ones so good they are a huge safety feature! making finding your loved one even at distance so easy with a torch (not that we let her off the lead but for those that do these are fantastic) The actual collar is well made and the crystals and the feature set what you choose are around the collar with NO skimping. Well worth the money and they get my 100% recommendation.
